Highlights of the June Meeting of Council

Decisions Made by Council

Approved Policies

Council approved two policies that provide guidance on the issues of Social Media and Virtual Care. Both policies address issues of particular relevance as a result of the pandemic.

Policy Consultation

Council released the Decision-Making for End of Life Care policy and the Dispensing Drugs policy for external consultation.

Are you on a Team or in a Group?

“If you have a sense of shared goals, that’s a team. If everyone knows everyone else’s superpower, that’s a team. A really good way to tell are the idea meetings. If you dread them because they’re where ideas go to die, that’s a group. If you look forward to them because your ideas get bigger and better, that’s a team.”

— Dr. Brian Goldman, author of the new book, The Power of Teamwork, speaks to Council

The Registrar/CEO Report

Dr. Nancy Whitmore reported on the following:

Engagement

We made 531 courtesy calls to physicians in the first five months of year — these calls flag a non-clinical, low-level concern brought to our attention by patients.

We received 8,187 calls to the Patient and Public Help Centre in the first five months of 2022. One-hundred percent of cases were handled within one business day.

Complaints

As of spring 2022, 53 percent of cases are being addressed through early resolution as compared to 16 percent four years ago.

Discipline

The Ontario Physicians and Surgeons Discipline Tribunal continues to improve the length of time to release decisions. In 2020, it took 12.5 weeks, on average, to release a decision. In June 2022, we had reduced the time to 6.8 weeks on average.

Registration

Continue to keep to timelines to assess regular and expedited registration applications, even during highest registration activity of CPSO calendar year. This is the result of new automated infrastructure.

The benchmark for regular application is 15 days and we are processing them within 13 days. The benchmark for an expedited application is five days and we are processing them within four days.

Positive Feedback from QI Webinars

  • 90 percent of participants agree or strongly agree that the webinar helped them better understand the College’s QI program.
  • 100 percent of participants would recommend the webinar to a colleague or friend.
  • More than one participant called the webinar “a nice introduction to the program.”
