Since 2023, CPSO has simplified licensing for internationally trained physicians (ITPs), providing clearer pathways, hands-on support, and multiple entry points. These updates reduce barriers, streamline credentialing, and allow qualified physicians to move more quickly and smoothly into practice—all while maintaining CPSO’s high standards for patient safety and professional excellence.
Why It Matters
Internationally trained physicians play a vital role in Ontario’s health care system. Streamlined registration ensures that these professionals can transition efficiently into practice, helping the province meet workforce needs, expand access to care, and strengthen health services in communities across Ontario.

Supporting a Smooth Transition
CPSO assesses applications directly, reducing delays and unnecessary duplication. Processing times may vary depending on individual circumstances. While the overall registration process can take an average of three months, once CPSO receives a complete application, with all necessary documents, a certificate of registration is typically issued within five business days.
Pathways to Registration for ITPs
CPSO offers multiple well-defined routes that align with international training standards. Each pathway has specific eligibility requirements, offering flexibility while safeguarding patient care. Some of these include:

- Physicians who have passed the Royal College’s written examination and are accepted into the PER are eligible for a restricted certificate to practise under supervision for up to 3 years while they complete time-in-practice requirements and Royal College certification exam.

- Physicians who have obtained Subspecialist Affiliate Status through the Royal College are eligible for a restricted certificate of registration to practice independently in their scope of practice.

- Family physicians from Australia, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States who obtain certification without examination from the College of Family Physicians of Canada may start independent practice immediately, without supervision or additional assessments.
Reminder: Additional pathways exist for U.S.-trained physicians who are Board-certified or Board-eligible!
