In this article, our Registration and Membership team answers the most common questions they receive about how to apply for a licence through CPSO and offers practical tips that can be shared with applicants to help them navigate the application process. (Follow us using the social media links at the bottom of the page for more useful information like this!)

Question: How long does it take, once I submit my application?

Answer: Processing times vary depending on the individual application. In most cases, a certificate to practise is issued within three months of submitting a complete application. Please note that we begin reviewing applications only once they are fully submitted — draft applications are not reviewed.

To avoid delays, follow these key steps:

  • Make sure your application is complete and submitted.
  • Include your full practise history (including breaks or residency).
  • Pay all required fees.
  • Request third-party documents early and have them sent to [email protected].
  • Optionally, grant CPSO access to verified source information from physiciansapply.ca or Federation Credentials Verification Service.

Being proactive about these details can significantly shorten processing times.

Question: I applied — how do I know if my documents were received?

Answer: You can easily check your document status through the CPSO Portal. We use four simple categories to help applicants understand where things stand:

  • Not Received: We’re still waiting for documents from you or a third party.
  • Received, Under Review: Give us up to two business days to review submitted documents.
  • Rejected: Your document didn’t meet all the requirements — we’ll provide an explanation and next steps.
  • Accepted: That’s a wrap! Your document has been approved.

Checking your status regularly helps you understand next steps and ensures your application keeps moving smoothly.

Need help? Email [email protected] or send a message through the Portal.

Question: Can I use physiciansapply.ca to apply to CPSO?

Answer: No — you must apply directly through the CPSO Portal.

However, we’ve streamlined the process for documents that have already been registered and verified through physiciansapply.ca. You can simply share those verified credentials with CPSO, which avoids duplication and extra fees.

It’s part of our ongoing effort to make the registration process more efficient for applicants.

Question: Where should third parties send required documents?

Answer: Third-party organizations — such as medical schools, licensing authorities, or postgraduate programs — can send documents directly to [email protected] or by mail/courier to:

College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario
80 College Street, Toronto, ON M5G 2E2

Sending documents directly helps ensure authenticity and speeds up review.

Question: Does CPSO issue work permits for internationally trained physicians (ITPs)?

Answer: The College does not issue work permits for ITPs, but we’re happy to help advise on registration questions. Internationally trained physicians may be eligible for licensure in Ontario through multiple registration pathways. Learn more about CPSO’s ITP pathways.
